Planning a group road trip? Let us offer two suggestions:

2. Make a list of everything that you will need for the road before you leave. Not sure what you really should pack? Check out these top items to bring on a road trip:
- Food. The best part of traveling by bus is that you get to make stops for real food (those airline portions keep getting smaller and smaller, don’t they?). However, it’s advisable to bring nonperishable snacks along for the ride. Pack a couple apples, single-serving pouches of crackers or pretzels, or some string cheese. (Tip: steer clear of nut products in case any of your fellow travelers is allergic.)
- Beverages. Bring reusable water bottles or your favorite travel mug and some java. If you’ve got kids, then pack a couple juice boxes. Just remember – the more liquid you drink, the more you’ll have to make pit stops!
- Entertainment. Road trips are the perfect time to catch up on your reading! Pack your Nook, Kindle, or some books from the library (just don’t loose them!). Bring along your MP3 player or portable DVD players and headphones. Pack some playing cards or a road trip bingo game to share!
- Medications. Do you get headaches or motion sickness? Keep necessary medications close at hand in a carry-on bag or purse. Also, don’t forget daily vitamins, a pocket first-aide kit, lip balm, and sunscreen.
- Layered clothes. Bring along mix-and-match outfits for your road trip. This will enable you to pack less and still have plenty to wear. Try to layer clothing as much as possible – cardigans over t-shirts, jeans that go with sandals or boots, etc… This way you can easily add or subtract clothing to stay comfortable – no matter what the weather is like.
- Cash & Credit Cards. Keep the cash to a minimum. If possible, bring at least two credit/debit cards and use them for the majority of your purchases. Plan on keeping them in separate locations and keep the contact number for your bank or credit card company in your phone. If one of the cards is lost or stolen you can call and have a hold placed on the account (and you’ll still have a back up card). If you are concerned about loosing your phone then keep the bank or credit card contact number written down elsewhere (such as your large suitcase, or spouse’s backpack).
