From July 14th to the 29th the Cal Expo in Sacramento, California will be devoted to the event of the summer: the California State Fair.
And before you decide that such an event is only fun if you’re a 4-H-er or bake-off contestant, consider these top 10 reasons to head west:
- The 2011 theme is “The Fun Just Got Bigger”. Rumors are that this means larger-than-life attractions, rides, games, and entertainment.
- One of the larger-than-life attractions is a giant bug exhibit. We’re talking humongous robotic insects. Kind of creepy. Kind of cool.
- A plethora of musical artists will be performing, including: MC Hammer, Lee Greenwood, Casey James, Moonwalker, and Reo Speedwagon.
- There’s a bunch of competitions for kids. California Kidz Kitchen will highlight the talents of young chefs and bakers. The Kids Talent Show offers a $250 cash prize to the best performer. And the Youth Art & Design Expo showcases visual art from young Californians.
- And there’s plenty of contests for adults! Even if you’re not competing you won’t want to miss competitions featuring creative arts, visual arts, karaoke, and performing arts.
- There’s a bunch of livestock competitions for animals you probably didn’t even know existed. Come see the Nigerian Dwarf goats and the Llamas. It’s like a giant petting zoo!
- The California State Fair Wine Competition. Need we say more? It’s considered one of the oldest and most renowned wine competitions in North America. And on July 29th there’s a special “Taste & Celebrate the Best” charity fundraiser (tickets are $25).
- There’s horse racing! Thoroughbreds, mules – there’s a race for every type of equine. And if watching Seabiscuit is the closest you’ve ever gotten to seeing a real horse race, then you’re in for a treat.
- Three words: Monster Truck Rides.
- Oh yeah. And there’s fireworks, water park rides, drool-worthy fair food (funnel cakes!), and dozens of carnival-style rides. What’s not to love?
